Pittsburgh, PA : A fatal accident on Monday, June 5, 2017
Police shut down the Squirrel Hill Tunnels late Monday night after a fatal accident involving a car and a semi-tractor on the Parkway East near the exit ramp leading to Squirrel Hill and Greenfield.
A 28-year-old man was killed, according to Post-Gazette news partner KDKA; his name has not been released.
Police said the man drove into the back of the truck shortly after 11 p.m., shearing off the car’s roof and killing the driver, who was the only person in the car. The truck driver was uninjured.
Another accident “involving a rubber-necker” was reported minutes later on the Parkway West, across from the accident in the outbound lanes. Medics were called to the scene of the second accident, though no one appeared to be seriously hurt.
Police requested all available units to respond to assist in the rerouting of traffic. The incidents had traffic backed up "as far as the eye can see," according to one officer.
All lanes of the Parkway East were reopened by 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
