Longmont,CO : Longmont police charge Firestone man in fatal motorcycle crash on December, Saturday 9th 2017
Longmont police have filed charges against a motorcycle rider who was riding with his friend, Drake Lenz, when Lenz was killed in a crash near Sandstone Ranch Park on Nov. 27.
Jeffrey Martin, 57, of Firestone, faces charges of reckless driving, driving while ability impaired and driving without a valid license.
Traffic Sgt. Eric Lewis said in an email that Martin and Lenz, 31, also of Firestone, were riding motorcycles eastbound on East Ken Pratt Boulevard at speeds faster than the posted 65 mph limit.
Lewis said the two were changing lanes and passing cars when Lenz sideswiped an SUV, also heading eastbound, in the right lane. He said Lenz then collided with the guardrail that crosses over the pedestrian underpass for Sandstone Ranch Park.
Lenz and his motorcycle separated at the end of the guardrail, where both crossed over into the westbound lanes of East Ken Pratt Boulevard.
Lenz was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound and pronounced dead at the scene. His toxicology report is not available at this time.
Martin was not injured in the collision. Lewis said Martin was questioned on scene and taken into custody on suspicion of DUI. He was booked and released pending charges.
Last Tuesday, Lewis said, Martin voluntarily returned to the Longmont Police Department, where he was charged.
Neither Lenz nor Martin had a motorcycle endorsement, Lewis said.
No charges are pending for the other drivers involved in the accident, Lewis said.
