Manhattan ,NY :4 cars crash, killing driver, injuring 7 in upper Manhattan on Sunday , June 28th 2015
A four-car collision in upper Manhattan left the driver who caused it dead and injured seven other people, including a 12-year-old boy, police and passengers involved in the wreck said.A silver Volkswagen GTI came barreling southbound down Marble Hill Ave. when its driver apparently tried to squeeze between two cars stopped at a red light at W. 228th St. in Marble Hill shortly after 5 a.m., police and a driver of one of the stopped cars said. The Volkswagen smashed into a black Chrysler 300 before it pinballed into a red Nissan Maxima, with enough force to shear the passenger side rear wheel off the Maxima, said Michael Duran, who was translating for the Nissan's driver, who gave his name only as Rene."The Chrysler and the Nissan were standing parallel at the red light and the silver car tried to pass in between," Duran said. Both stopped cars were struck with such force that they were launched across the intersection and into an oncoming Ford Taurus, said Rene, whose wife and 12-year-old son were also in the car."The Volkswagen must have been going at least 80 mph," Duran said."I'm still trying to understand what (the driver) was thinking."Remarkably, all three of them were able to walk away from the wreck."We're OK. My back and neck are a little sore," Rene said.Rene and his family were heading back to their home in Rhode Island after they made a day trip to the Bronx for a reunion with friends from the Dominican Republic, Duran said. The intersection looked like a junk yard, with auto parts, shattered glass and mangled metal strewn around the area.Emergency responders rushed the 54-year-old Volkswagen driver to Columbia University Medical Center but he could not be saved, according to officials. One other passenger from the Volkswagen and six from the other cars were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition, Duran and a Fire Department spokesman said.
