FOWLERVILLE, MI : Police identify 2 victims of I-96 crashes in Livingston County on Thursday, December 8th 2016
The Livingston County Sheriff's Office has identified two victims of an multiple-vehicle accident on I-96 Thursday, Dec. 8, that resulted in crashes involving more than 50 vehicles and three fatalities.
According to the statement, westbound I-96 was closed for 12 hours as law, fire and rescue agencies responded to the accident at 9:47 a.m. that involved 53 vehicles west of Fowlerville Road near the Livingston County border.
The sheriff's office said the pileup may have started because of hazardous weather conditions.
The crashes resulted in the deaths of Ann Arbor resident Homer L. Tew, 69, and his wife, Theresa O'Connor Tew, 62, and another victim believed to be from Hollywood, Florida, the statement said. Homer L. Tew and the unidentified victim were driving when the incident occurred.
The third victim has not been identified pending notification of family, according to the sheriff's office.
There were 11 people taken from the scene by Livingston County Ambulance, Meridian Township Fire Department, and NIESA EMS to both Sparrow Hospital in Lansing and St. Joseph Livingston Hospital. Conditions are unknown, although the sheriff's office said none of the injuries were life-threatening.
According to the statement, westbound I-96 was reopened at 10:19 p.m. Thursday night and eastbound I-96 was reopened at 2:50 p.m. Thursday.
The incident is currently being investigated by the Livingston County Sheriff's Office Accident investigation team.
There were 21 agencies that responded to the incident, not including the Livingston County Sheriff's Office and Livingston Essential Transportation Services.
