Driver sentenced to jail in drunk-driving crash that killed motorcyclist

A South Daytona man who pulled into the path of a motorcyclist while drunk, resulting in the death of a woman passenger on the bike, was sentenced Thursday to nearly a year in jail.Circuit Judge James Foxman sentenced Ted L. Haberkamp, 34, to 364 days in the Volusia County Branch Jail, followed by seven years' probation.Haberkamp also must perform 100 hours of community service and pay about $9,000 in restitution to the family of the victim, Jacqueline Lins, 33, of New Smyrna Beach.She died of massive head injuries.Haberkamp pleaded no contest in April to driving under the influence resulting in death and failure to stop at the accident scene. Previously, he was convicted of drunk driving in 1989 in Maryland.The driver of the motorcycle carrying Lins, Scott Alan Thomas, 30, of New Smyrna Beach, also was legally drunk when the accident occurred. He suffered minor injuries.
