Seattle,WA : Driver in deadly crash who sped off with victim’s grocery cart stuck to grille gets 8 1/2 years on October, Friday 6th 2017

A woman who ran over a pedestrian in a Seattle crosswalk and then sped away from the scene with the victim’s grocery cart stuck to the grille of her car was sentenced Friday to 8 ½ years in prison.

Treza Hafzalla, 28, of Seattle, pleaded guilty in August to vehicular homicide while driving under the influence in the Jan. 2 crash near Green Lake. Killed was Donnelle “Nellie” Yelli, 62.

Yelli had made it more than halfway across Wallingford Avenue North with her wheeled grocery cart when she was struck in the crosswalk at North 82nd Street. She died at the scene.

Hafzalla drove about a mile, then pulled over and called her boyfriend to come get her and take her home. Instead, he drove Hafzalla back to the collision scene, Seattle police said.

Hafzalla told an officer at the scene that she had finished her shift at a local pub and then drank alcohol before heading home, according to police. Police said she hit Yelli in the crosswalk around 6:40 p.m. and then fled.

Police later found Hafzalla’s damaged 2000 GMC Jimmy parked on the street in the 7800 block of 11th Avenue Northeast, with Yelli’s grocery cart still attached to the front of the vehicle.

Yelli was a decades-long Seahawks fan who had watched a game at a friend’s house and was on her way home to a Greenwood boardinghouse she shared with other women when she was killed.
