New Beadford, MA : Teen driver crashes into North End New Bedford house on Monday night, March 13, 2017

Two teenagers were hospitalized with serious injuries Monday night after the car they were driving left a parking lot, jumped a curb, struck a sign, and crashed into a home at 119 Orleans St. near the Normandin Middle School, police said.

Police said that their investigation showed a 19-year-old male had allowed a 16-year-old male to drive. At around 9 p.m., the car accelerated across the Normandin parking lot, jumped the curb, struck a sign and then hit the house.

The vehicle struck the front porch and caused damage to the foundation, Police Spokesman Lt. Amos Melo said in a news release.

The New Bedford Fire Department extricated the younger teen and they were both taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

During the investigation an odor of natural gas was in the air, so Eversource Energy was called in to shut off the gas while repairs were made, officials said.

The Police Department's accident reconstruction team is continuing to investigate the incident. Police did not reveal the names or home communities of the teens.
