TOWN OF BELOIT, WI : Orfordville woman died in a crash on Thursday, November, 16th 2017
An Orfordville woman died in a crash involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck on Highway 213 Thursday.
Melissa M. Whitten, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash near County Highway Q, according to a release from the Town of Beloit Police Department. Whitten's 5-month-old daughter, who was a passenger in her pickup truck, was taken to an area hospital as a precaution and it was determined she was not injured. The child was later released to Whitten's family.
The crash was reported at approximately 5:37 p.m.
The Driver of the semi-truck, Kirk R. Schmidt, 66, of South Beloit, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from a hospital.
The crash caused a power outage in the area and residents have been without power for several hours during the crash investigation and vehicle recovery due to extensive damage caused to power lines. Alliant Energy crews were on the scene working to restore power as quickly as possible. As of Friday morning power had been restored to the area, according to Alliant's outage monitoring network.
Law enforcement from the Town of Beloit Police Department, Rock County Sheriff's Office, and Wisconsin State Patrol Reconstruction Unit were on scene for several hours conducting the investigation.
