CUMBERLAND, MD : A chain-reaction crash on Baltimore Avenue on Monday, 2nd March, 2020

Seven people were injured Monday afternoon when a driver fleeing police struck a vehicle head-on on Baltimore Avenue, starting a chain-reaction crash, Maryland State Police said.

In total, four vehicles were involved and none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The driver, who was not named, was in police custody Monday evening at UPMC Western Maryland. He allegedly gave police a false name and was wanted on warrants in several states, including Maryland.

He was expected to receive a bond hearing late Monday.

Police said the incident started about 2:55 p.m. when an Infinity vehicle driven by the suspect committed an unspecified violation as he passed a trooper in a marked cruiser on westbound Interstate 68 prior to the Willowbrook Road exit.

With the trooper in pursuit, the Infinity exited onto Willowbrook Road and turned onto Baltimore Avenue.

“As the trooper got off that exit, he lost sight of the vehicle for a few seconds,” read a news release issued by state police. “Upon cresting a hill on Baltimore Avenue, the trooper observed the aforementioned Infinity traveling down Baltimore Avenue going the wrong way and striking another vehicle head on, which caused the two vehicles behind the struck vehicle to rear end the vehicles in front of them.”

There were four men in the fleeing vehicle and a combined four in the other three.

Three of the four vehicles were disabled, police said.
