Lancaster, South Carolina
A three-vehicle wreck on S.C. 9 in eastern Lancaster County killed a Pageland woman, injured a Kershaw woman and closed the highway for at least four hours Wednesday.
Norma Jean Plyler Moree, 69, of Pageland died in the accident, which occurred near Earnhardt Lane about 4 miles east of Buford Crossroads, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Gary Miller.
Miller said Moree was following a tractor trailer west on S.C. 9 at 10:24 a.m. in a 2011 Toyota Camry when Heather Marie Rollings, 23, of Kershaw crossed the center line in a 2002 GMC pickup traveling east.
Rollings’ pickup sideswiped the 18 wheeler and hit Moree’s car head-on. Moree was pronounced dead on the scene, Miller said. Rollings, severely injured and trapped in her vehicle, was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Her condition was unavailable.
The driver of the 2016 Volvo tractor trailer, Christopher Lee Horton, 38, of Laurinburg, N.C., was transported to Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster via ambulance, where his condition was unknown.
The highway remained closed much of the afternoon as troopers investigated the accident. No charges were immediately filed, and the incident remains under investigation.
Moree, nicknamed Butterbean, was a native of Chesterfield County. She worked at Mickey’s Restaurant for eight years. Her funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at Smyrna Baptist Church, where she was a member. Baumgartner Funeral Home is in charge.
