BENTON CO, MS : A teenager is dead after the car he was riding in crash on Tuesday, October 3, 2017
A teenager is dead after the car he was riding in crashed into a school bus Ashland, Mississippi.
The crash happened outside Ashland Middle School near 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
Robert Luna, who was the first person on the scene, said the events of the morning keep playing over in his head.
"Nothing. There's absolutely nothing I could do to help to save these people," Luna said. "I dropped my son off this morning at the end of the school and when I came around, this bus was stopped in my middle of the road and the car was coming from the east side about 60 miles an hour."
Three people were in the car that crashed into the school bus. Kaleb McKinnie, 14, died. Another child was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. The car's driver was taken to another hospital. None of the students on the bus were injured.
"He ran right up under the back end of the bus, come out on the driver's side, and clipped the whole passenger's side," Luna recalled.
Benton County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Joe Batts said speed and the time of day are believed to be factors in the crash.
"This time of day, with the weather the way it is now, the sun always has the potential to be a problem," Batts said.
