A Housatonic man was killed and two others suffered serious injuries early Saturday in what police say was an alcohol-fueled crash on East Street in Great Barrington.
Garrett J. Norton, 21, the front seat passenger in the vehicle, was transported to Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington, where he was pronounced dead, according to Great Barrington Police.
The two others — Kyle S. Bailey, 22, of Glendale, and Matthew A. Moriarty, 20, of Great Barrington, were transported first to Berkshire Medical Center then to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
Moriarty was reported in fair condition on Saturday afternoon; no information on Bailey was available.
Bailey, who was behind the wheel of the car about 1 a.m. when it crashed into a utility pole, was arrested at the hospital, police said. He was charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol, OUI causing serious injuries, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, failure to stay within marked lanes and possession of an open container of alcohol inside a motor vehicle, police said. He was to be held on $7,000 bail.
Members of the Great Barrington Fire Department had to extricate Norton from the vehicle. Police did not release the make or model of the vehicle.
The Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad and Massachusetts State Police also responded to the scene.
The accident remains under investigation by Great Barrington Police Department.
