Worcester, MA : ATV rider from West Boylston is hurt in Winchendon crash on Monday night, July 11, 2016

Emergency personnel worked for more than an hour to rescue a man injured in a four-wheeler crash after his vehicle went off a trail near Lost Lake Monday night.

Deputy Fire Chief Ricci Ruschioni said firefighters had difficulty accessing the trail near Teel Road and Route 140 to help the 42-year-old victim around 9 p.m. They used bolt cutters to get through a closed gate and drove the deputy chief’s personal pickup truck down the path to rescue the driver.

Officials said Michael A. Lamarca of West Boylston was taken by helicopter to a Worcester hospital with injuries, including a broken leg, that did not appear to be life-threatening. He was alert when firefighters found him.

A friend, identified as Christopher Howland of Ashburnham, was driving an ATV close by and reported the incident, according to police. Police Lt. Kevin Wolski said the friend reported he found Mr. Lamarca pinned under the ATV after it rolled over.

Deputy Chief Ruschioni said he understood that when the driver went off the four-wheeler trail, he flew through the air and hit a tree.

“He came down and spun around off the side of the road. He was in a small embankment,” Deputy Chief Ruschioni said.

The state Environmental Police are investigating.
