RAYNHAM, MA : Abington man facing drunken driving charge for Raynham highway crash on Sunday, 6th September, 2020

A 28-year-old Holbrook man was seriously injured and a driver is being charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, after a single vehicle crash on Route 495 in Raynham led to a medical helicopter landing on the highway on Sunday night, according to Massachusetts State Police.

The driver, a 42-year-old Abington man, suffered minor injuries, state police said. The Holbrook man was his passenger, police said.

The crash took place at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday on Route 495 southbound, south of Exit 8 in Raynham, said Trooper James DeAngelis, a state police spokesperson. Troopers from the Middleboro state police barracks responded after receiving a report of a 2005 Jeep Wrangler that crashed in the area. The troopers were joined by firefighters from the Raynham Fire Department, who requested a Medflight helicopter to the scene.

The highway was completely shut down at 12:16 a.m. to allow the medical transport helicopter to land on the road, DeAngelis said. The helicopter was on the ground for about 25 minutes before taking off for Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, he said.

While the crash “remains under investigation,” state police have enough evidence to charge the Abington man with operating under the influence of alcohol, DeAngelis said. The 42-year-old driver is being issued a summons to appear in court at a later date, DeAngelis said.

The driver was brought by ambulance to Good Samaritan Medical Center for treatment of his minor injuries.
