Erie, PA : One man was killed and two other people were injured in an early morning crash on Friday, 11th November 2016
Erie police investigators searched on Friday for evidence, including possible surveillance video, in their hunt for answers to a violent two-car collision that killed a city man and injured two others, one critically, at an eastside intersection early that morning.
Jorge Toledo, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene following a crash that was first reported at about 12:20 a.m. Friday at the intersection of East 21st and Ash streets. Investigators believe Toledo was a passenger in a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer, which they believe was driven by Tina Pierce, no age or address available, that collided with a 2014 Dodge Caravan driven by 32-year-old Kevin Deck, no address available, according to police.
At least one of the vehicles was speeding at the time of the collision, said Sgt. Jeff Annunziata, a traffic accident investigator with the Erie Bureau of Police. Both vehicles continued traveling east on East 21st Street after the collision in the intersection, with the van coming to rest on the north side of the street about 30 yards east of Ash Street and the SUV coming to rest about 85 yards east of the intersection, where it hit a Chevrolet Aveo that was parked on the north side of the street facing west.
Toledo and Pierce were both ejected from the Chevrolet Blazer, Annunziata said. Pierce was taken to the hospital, where she was in critical but stable condition Friday morning, he said.
Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook pronounced Toledo dead at the scene at 1:45 a.m. Friday. No autopsy will be done, but toxicology testing will be performed, Cook said.
Deck was also taken to the hospital and was in fair condition on Friday morning, according to Annunziata.
He said investigators were still working to confirm which direction each vehicle was traveling when the crash occurred at the intersection, which is controlled by a traffic light.
Annunziata and a detective in the Erie Bureau of Police Identification Unit returned to the intersection shortly after 8 a.m. Friday to take photos of the area, with the assistance of an Erie Bureau of Fire aerial truck. Part of the ongoing investigation will also involve checking area businesses to see if any surveillance cameras captured footage of the collision, according to police.
