Fort Myers, FL : Lee school bus driver cited for running red light after crash at the intersection of McGregor Boulevard and Gladiolus Drive on Monday, Sep 21, 2015
A Lee County school bus driver was cited after troopers say she ran a red light and collided with a vehicle.
The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. Monday at the intersection of McGregor Boulevard and Gladiolus Drive.
There were two students and another adult aboard the school bus. None were injured. The bus driver, Vivian Highsmith, 46, received a ticket for running the red light.
The driver of the other vehicle, Mikia Rogers, 22, walked away shaken up and with some scratches.
"There was a lot going on at first due to the fact that I lost two family members to a car accident not so long ago. But I’m OK. I'm lucky to be alive," Rogers said.
A Florida Highway Patrol report states that the bus was westbound on Gladiolus, failed to stop for the red light, and T-boned Rogers' vehicle.
Lee County School District spokeswoman Amity Chandler said "discipline doesn't occur until the court process is concluded," and Highsmith will not drive a bus until the district's transportation department reviews the charges and conditions of the accident to determine what retraining is necessary.
