Joplin, MO : A Cassville man was killed and his teenage passenger seriously injured in a head-on collision on Thursday, August 10, 2017

A Cassville man was killed and his teenage passenger seriously injured in a head-on collision at 10:15 a.m. Thursday on U.S. Highway 60 in Verona, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

James A. Turner, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lawrence County coroner, the patrol said. His body was taken to Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City. A passenger in the vehicle, Leslie Turner, 14, was flown by medical helicopter to Mercy Hospital Springfield, the patrol said.

Their eastbound Chevrolet Equinox crossed the centerline of the highway in heavy rain and struck head-on a westbound semitrailer driven by George L. Belthius, 61, of Oldfield, the patrol said. Belthius escaped injury.

• Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 3:10 p.m. Thursday on Route P, south of Golden City in Barry County, the patrol said.

One of the drivers, Robert A. McPhail, 30, of Holiday Island, Arkansas, was taken to Mercy Hospital in Berryville, Arkansas, with moderate injuries. A passenger in the other vehicle, Panha Keo, 30, of Berryville, was taken to Mercy Hospital in Rogers, Arkansas, with serious injuries.

McPhail's northbound Lincoln Towncar struck head-on a car driven by Makara Khen, 36, of Berryville, the patrol said.
