St. George, UT : Man killed in ATV accident in southern Utah on Friday, January 9, 2015

A 79-year-old Tremonton man died Friday afternoon after the ATV he was riding in rolled over in an embankment and landed on top of him at Welcome Spring near Utah Hill off Old Highway 91, Sgt. David Crouse of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

Crouse said the ATV did not have any seatbelts, and the man did not wear a helmet.

He did not release the name of the man, who owns a second home in Littlefield, Arizona, pending notification of next of kin

“There was no indication of traffic violations,” Crouse said, adding WCSO is continuing its investigation of the cause of the crash.

The man was with a group of ATV riders who frequent the area , according to a member of the group who declined to give her name.

According to emergency dispatch radio traffic, the rollover was reported via satellite phone and the reporting party had little information as to where the group was except that it was near Utah Hill off Old Highway 91.

Life Flight, Ivins-Santa Clara Medical Emergency Medical Services, WCSO, Washington County search and rescue and the Bureau of Land Management officers responded.

The Life Flight pilot was able to find the area of the crash and direct responders, Crouse said.
