Santa Clarita Valley, CA : Castaic woman killed, Saugus man injured in a two-vehicle head-on traffic collision on Sierra Highway on Wednesday, June 29, 2016

A Castaic woman was killed and a Saugus man taken to the hospital with injuries following a two-vehicle head-on traffic collision Wednesday on Sierra Highway in the Santa Clarita Valley, an officer with the California Highway Patrol said.

The fatal crash happened about 3:20 a.m. Wednesday on Sierra Highway just north of Davenport Road, CHP Officer Eric Preissman said Wednesday.

Killed in the crash was Monique Garcia, 23, of Castaic, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department said late Wednesday.

The sole survivor of the two-car crash was identified by CHP officers as Jonathan Bernardi, 43, of Saugus.

Garcia, driving a silver-colored 2005 Nissan Sentra, was traveling northbound on Sierra north of Davenport as Bernardi headed south on Sierra, Preissman said.

The Nissan driver crossed over the double yellow line and into the path of the other motorist driving a 2015 black Dodge Dart.

“The other driver was unable to take evasive action and the two vehicles collided head-on,” the CHP officer said.

Garcia suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics, Preissman said.

Bernardi suffered injuries that were believed to be “non-life-threatening” and was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.

Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the crash. CHP officers were investigating.
