Hyden,KY : Car crashes into eclipse watchers, 1 killed in Kentucky on August, Monday 21st 2017
A woman was killed and two others injured when a car crashed into a crowd of people watching the solar eclipse Monday in Kentucky.
Mackenzie Hays, 23, was killed when a Lincoln LS driven by Alyssa Noble crossed the center line, struck a utility pole and then hit two women watching the eclipse on the sidewalk in Hyden, Kentucky, about 120 miles southeast of Lexington, WRDW reported. Another woman, identified by police as Rhonda Belcher, 41, was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital with injuries.
The two women were on their lunch break and watching the eclipse when the incident occurred, police said.
Noble, 38, was also injured. She was taken to Holston-Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.
The Kentucky State Police said it isn't clear what led to the crash and the incident remains under investigation. Experts had advised using extra caution while driving during the eclipse, due to heavy crowds and the likelihood of distracted drivers. The eclipse's path of totality - the period that experienced the greatest periods of darkness - cut through the southwest part of Kentucky.
