lakeland, FL : Elderly man dead after being hit by truck. The accident happened Thursday afternoon on May 29th 2014.
83-year-old Cleveland Heights man Dr. Yehuda Cohen was hit by a semi delivering groceries to Unger's Kosher Market on South Taylor Road.
Cohen died at the scene.
Cohen was leaving the establishment when the accident happened Thursday afternoon.
The owner of the market, Marek Rosenberg, knew Cohen for almost 40 years. "I just feel very sorry for the family," .Rosenberg tells Channel 3's Hilary Golston. "I don't know I'm a little bit shaked up... I don't know what to tell you... This is not a pleasant thing."
Rosenberg says Cohen frequented the shop many mornings on his way to the Congregation Shomre Shaboth Synagogue.
"He stops.. he buys himself the stuff.. he goes," Marek tells Golston. "The same thing happened today.. Unfortunately the accident happened."
Cohen was a prominent member of the community, Rosenberg says. He is listed as a Rabbi on the Hebrew Memorial Chapel's website, however the funeral services director says he was a teaching Rabbi.
Cohan was also adjunct faculty at the Cuyahoga Community College's eastern campus in Highland Hills from 1994-2010.
Rosenberg says from his perspective the incident was purely an accident. He reports the truck driver, who he's done business with for almost a decade, was not charged or arrested.
Services were held for Cohen Thursday night at the Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Funeral Home.
