BERKELEY, CA : Fatal collision in westbound I-80 lanes just east of Gilman Avenue on Wednesday, 25th December, 2019
All lanes of Interstate 80 have reopened after a fatal crash early Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol said.
Shortly after 5:20 a.m., officers responded to reports of the collision in westbound I-80 lanes just east of Gilman Avenue, and found at least two vehicles involved in a collision with one that had caught fire.
In a statement, the CHP said a blue Honda Civic traveling westbound in the No. 2 lane lost control and spun out before hitting a concrete center divide and blocking the No. 1 lane. A Good Samaritan driving a black Honda Civic stopped behind the other Honda Civic and called for help.
But moments later, a Toyota Corolla drove up and struck the black Honda, losing control and spinning out across right-side lanes before coming back to the No. 3 lane with its driver side facing oncoming traffic. An approaching Toyota pickup truck was unable to stop in time and hit the Corolla, which burst into flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
