Investigators say the crash happened when another car turned out in front of the off-duty patrolman's motorcycle.
Lentz has been employed with the department since 1995 and was in line for a promotion to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
Senatobia Police Chief Steve Holts said these are the most difficult crashes to work, particularly when the officer is from the area.
"It's a brotherhood and it's very hard once you find out you have a brother that has fallen," said Holts. "It is very hard.""We serve the general public trying to prevent crashes, unfortunately we're not immune to crashes either," said Ray Hall, Mississippi State Highway Patrol.People in the community describe Lentz as a friendly man.He leaves behind a wife, daughter, and son.Senatobia police say it does not appear that the driver of the other car, David Lentz, a young man with no relation to the victim, will face any charges in the crash.
