Firefighters responded to a hit and run crash in South St. Petersburg early Thursday morning.
The fiery accident happened around 3 a.m. near 16th Street South and 9th Avenue South. St. Petersburg Police officers confirmed that two cars were involved.
When SPPD officers arrived on scene, they found one car empty. They said the driver and any possible occupants of that car might have fled on foot. The second car was fully involved, there were three people inside, officers said. Rescue crews got one woman out of the burning car and a medical helicopter took her to the Bayfront Medical Center with severe burns.
Two other people in the burning car were pronounced dead at the scene. Crews couldn't rescue them. Officials haven't identified the victims yet.
Officials closed 16th Street from 7th to 11th avenues.
