Apopka, FL : Lynx bus crashed into a church on North Park Avenue in Apopka on Friday morning, January 2, 2015
A Lynx bus crashed into the park Avenue Workship Center in Apopka Friday morning.
Police said the bus driver swerved to try to avoid hitting another driver on on Park Avenue, who may have run a stop sign.
"It was scary because I wasn't sure if everyone was OK," said witness Jennifer Gilliam.
Gilliam said she heard the loud crash and ran out to help as she called 911.
"The people involved in the accident were in so much shock they really couldn't say much," said Gilliam.
Two children were in the car and one passenger was on the bus.
"A car ran a stop sign and ran into the bus," said Lynx representative Matt Friedman. "The bus was doing its job and the vehicle on the road obviously wasn't doing what they were supposed to do and they ran into the bus."
The windshield on the bus was gone, and investigators pulled cinderblocks from the inside.
Meanwhile, the other car was heavily damaged and Gilliam said she was not able to get the children out.
"All the doors were jammed and I wasn't strong enough to open them. I think the children are mostly scared, but everyone seems to be OK, especially considering the condition of the vehicles," Gilliam said.
Police said no one was seriously injured.
Park Avenue Worship Center leaders said they are hoping to have service as usual on Sunday and are thankful no one was seriously injured.
"What you saw here today, it looks a lot worse than it really was, and as you mentioned, it's really good from the standpoint there weren't many passengers on the vehicle because it was so early in the day," Friedman.
