A driver was killed in a collision involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 70 near Hancock early Friday morning.
According to a release from the Maryland State Police, 60-year-old Allen Wayne Kifer died in the crash that took place on I-70 East near the 3-mile marker at about 2:20 a.m. Friday. A tractor-trailer lost control on the interstate and jack-knifed, according to the release. A second tractor-trailer struck Kifer’s vehicle and the jack-knifed tractor-trailer, killing Kifer.
About 20 minutes later, as traffic backed up behind the first crash scene, a second crash occurred about one mile west of the first. The preliminary investigation indicates a tractor-trailer rear-ended a stopped tractor-trailer, causing a fire in the striking vehicle. The driver of the second tractor-trailer was taken to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown and is listed in serious condition.
Troopers report heavy rain in the area with reduced visibility at the time of the crashes.
