Scott County, IA : Two motorcyclists killed in fiery crash on U.S. 67 in LeClaire on Sunday night, September 11, 2016
Two motorcyclists were killed Sunday night in a fiery crash on U.S. 67 in LeClaire.
The Scott Emergency Communications Center received the call at 10:22 p.m.
According to the Scott County Sheriff's office, a red Ford Explorer was traveling north in the 3100 block of South Cody Road (U.S. 67) in LeClaire when it crossed the center line into the path of the southbound traffic.
The vehicle struck a motorcycle head-on and the motorcycle became lodged in the front of the Explorer. The Explorer then struck another motorcycle which was traveling behind the first motorcycle. The second motorcycle struck a third motorcycle which was following the first two. At some point the Explorer and the first motorcycle became engulfed in flames.
The drivers of the first two motorcycle were killed instantly. The driver of the Explorer was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the third motorcycle was treated and released at the scene.
The motorcycle drivers were not wearing helmets.
The Scott County Accident Investigation Team was called to assist with the investigation. Other assisting agencies were the LeClaire Fire Department, Medic Ambulance service, Med-Force, LeClaire Police Department, Scott County Sheriff's Office Reserves, and the Scott County Mobile Command Center.
The accident remains under investigation pending charges and family notifications.
