Hayward, CA : 2 high school students in car crash on I-880 in Hayward early Sunday, September 4, 2016
A car crash on Interstate 880 in Hayward killed two James Logan High School students early Sunday, authorities said.
The students died after their Honda Accord collided with a Dodge Ram pickup truck on southbound I-880 just north of the A Street exit at 1:25 a.m., Officer Damian Castro of the California Highway Patrol said Monday.
The New Haven Unified School District, which includes Union City’s James Logan High School, confirmed the identity of the students on the district’s Facebook page.
“The New Haven community is mourning the tragic loss of our students, Izaiah Mease and Junior (Joe) Ioramo. Our condolences go out to the families, and we offer our support in this difficult time,” the post said.
Mease, who was 17 and lived in Union City, was driving the Honda and died at the scene. He was a linebacker on his school’s football team and was entering his senior year.
Ioramo, 16, died at Eden Medical Center.
Four other people were taken to the hospital with what were believed to be minor injuries, Cistaro said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Relatives and friends of Mease and Ioramo held a candlelight vigil in their memory Sunday evening.
