Volusia County , FL :Toddler, 3, killed in Volusia County rollover crash on Thursday , June 25th 2015
Toddler has died after the SUV he was riding in flipped over in Volusia County Thursday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.Alexander Cortes, 3, was taken to DeLand Hospital with his mother 28-year-old Hilda Garcia, who suffered minor injuries from the crash.According to FHP, Garcia was headed north on U.S. Highway 17 near Park Avenue in DeLand when her left tires drifted onto the grassy median. In an effort to keep her 2000 Ford SUV on the road, Garcia over-corrected and turned the wheel sharply to the right, which is what many drivers often to do when they find themselves drifting off a roadway, said FHP spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes. But when Garcia jerked the steering wheel to the right, the SUV flipped onto the right side. Although Alexander's car seat was properly secured in the car, he was not fastened into the seat. It's not clear if Alexander was able to free himself from the car seat as his mother drove or if he was never secured in the seat to begin with, Montes added. When the SUV flipped, the child was partially thrown from the car which rolled over and crushed his body, killing him.Garcia, who Montes said does not have a driver's license because of immigration issues, was devastated after her son's death. She has not been questioned by FHP."We're going to give her a few days to grieve then we'll try to talk to her again," Montes said. The investigation into the crash is ongoing. No criminal charges have been filed.
