Salt Lake City, UT : Two hurt in downtown Salt Lake City auto-ped crash remain hospitalized on Wednesday, 19th October 2016

Two men remained hospitalized Thursday, a day after they were struck by a truck as they sat on a parkway in downtown Salt Lake City's Rio Grande district.

Salt Lake City police Sgt. Brandon Shearer said one of the men, age unknown, remained in critical condition, but his vital signs had stabilized.

The second man, 29, was in serious condition.

"The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but it appears it may have been caused by a medical issue" involving the 28-year-old driver, Shearer said.

The incident occurred at 9:26 a.m. Wednesday at 400 South and 500 West, an area known for its transient street camps.

The Mountain Crane Service pickup truck was eastbound on 400 South as it approached a red light at 500 West.

When the light turned green, the truck accelerated and struck the rear of a car before veering to the right, police said.

The truck then hit three power poles and the victims, who were sitting on a grass strip between 400 West and 500 West.

Rocky Mountain Power crews worked into Wednesday night to make repairs to the damaged poles.
