Two people were killed in an overnight crash near Portland.

The crash happened at the intersection of Lake Springs Road and Highway 31 West just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the semi was stopped at the intersection when the car slammed into the back of it.

The driver and a passenger were killed. No identities were released.

The driver of the semi was not hurt.

It was not immediately clear whether speed was involved. It was also unknown if drugs or alcohol played a factor.

Both roads were open to traffic around 5:30 a.m.
