Hickory, NC : One person died in car crash on 17th Street NW near Main Avenue NW on Sunday, Aug 9, 2015

A crash that left one person in critical condition is being investigated by police after the driver ran off.

Just after 4 a.m. Sunday, a man was driving a 2014 Kia Soul when he struck a utility police on 17th Street NW near Main Avenue NW. Police say the man drove away from the scene and parked behind a home before fleeing on foot.

Unrestrained passenger, Erik Boyles, sustained critical injuries in the crash. Boyles was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center by two people who arrived at the scene before being transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

The Hickory Police Department say the investigation is ongoing.
