Topeka, KS : One person injured in a three vehicle crash in East Topeka on Friday night, February 6, 2015
An intoxicated driver struck a car and a utility pole in a crash Friday night that involved three vehicles in East Topeka, authorities said.
Topeka police officer Patrick Lauver said a black Kia was waiting to turn left onto S.E. Maryland from eastbound S.E. 29th, and a second vehicle had slowed or stopped behind it. A third-vehicle, a Buick LeSabre, that also was eastbound on S.E. 29th struck the second vehicle, which in turn struck the first vehicle waiting to turn.
After the Buick struck the vehicle, it veered south and struck a utility pole and fence, Lauver said.
Officers at the scene conducted a field sobriety test with the male driver of the Buick and determined he was intoxicated, Lauver said. He was handcuffed and taken into custody for further testing at the Law Enforcement Center to determine whether he was legally drunk.
Lauver said the female passenger of the Buick was taken to a hospital by American Medical Response ambulance for treatment of injuries.
No other injuries were reported.
S.E. 29th remained closed in both directions near the scene from about 8:20 p.m., when the crash occurred, until at least 9:20 p.m.
