Milpitas, CA : Motorists pull driver from burning car after I-880 crash on Thursday morning, November 17, 2016
At least three motorists pulled a driver out of a burning vehicle following a Thursday morning crash on northbound Interstate 880, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver sustained "serious" burn injuries and broken ribs and was rushed to Valley Medical Center, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.
The accident was reported at 5:20 a.m. near Highway 237 and resulted in all lanes being closed for about one hour. A Nissan sedan was traveling in the non-commuter fast lane when it stopped or slowed down, said Lee.
The driver of Ford F-350 truck told the CHP he was following the Maxima and "glanced down for a moment," Lee said. The driver of the truck looked up and saw brake lights and didn't have time to avoid the crash, Lee said.
The truck hit the back of the Nissan, which immediately burst into flames, Lee said.
Several passing drivers immediately stopped to help, which is why the CHP had early reports of 10 cars involved in the crash. At least three people helped pull the driver of the Nissan out of the burning car through the driver side window. One of the Good Samaritans suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation, according to the CHP.
The driver of the Nissan sustained burn injuries and was taken to a hospital, Lee said. He is not considered to be in critical condition.
The CHP is not sure why the driver of the Nissan had slowed down or stopped, Lee said. The CHP did receive a prior call in the same area regarding a vehicle stalled in the traffic lanes.
All lanes were shut down for about 45 minutes, causing a massive backup. All lanes were reopened at 6:47 a.m.
