The officer and at least one person in the Pontiac were injured. They were transported to a hospital.
Interim Gonzales Police Chief Keith Wise told KSBW that the crash happened during a chase.
The officer was chasing a white Malibu at 60 mph when the Pontiac "got mixed in the middle," Wise said. The SUV had its emergency siren and lights activated. The CHP said it's likely that the officer could not see the Pontiac until it was too late. The Pontiac driver was attempting to turn left at 800 Alta Street, in front of Constellation winery.
The Malibu driver escaped by speeding southbound on Highway 101.
Wise did not know what the Malibu driver was wanted for, or what spurred the chase.
"Everything is still kind of sketchy at this point," Wise told KSBW.
