Four people were injured in a vehicle rollover crash early Wednesday morning on the Ohio Turnpike in Erie County.
Johnny Penafiel, 21, of Minnesota, was driving near mile post 129 at 4:10 a.m. Wednesday when he lost control of his 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer, according to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The vehicle went off the left side of the road and hit the median, then went off the right side of the road, where it rolled several times through a ditch.
All three passengers, also from Minnesota, were ejected from the vehicle. According to the release, none of the passengers was wearing a seatbelt. Penafiel was not ejected, according to Lt. Richard Reeder of the Milan Post.
All four occupants suffered incapacitating injuries, according to the patrol.
Johnny Penafiel and Stefany Rosas, 21, were transported by LifeFlight to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Penafiel was in fair condition Wednesday afternoon.
Alex Sevilla, 30, was transported by North Central EMS to FisherTitusHospital. Katherine Penafiel, 19, was transported by North Central EMS to Firelands Regional Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition on Wednesday afternoon.
The crash remains under investigation, but alcohol and drugs are not suspected.
“We suspect a possible sleepy driver situation,” Lt. Richard Reeder of Milan Post said.
South Amherst Fire Department, LifeFlight, North Central EMS and Interstate Towing all assisted at the scene.
