Charlotte, NC : Police ID woman killed in deadly head-on crash on May 7th 2014

A head-on crash in southwest Charlotte killed a woman Wednesday morning.

The other driver, who walked away from the accident on Steele Creek Road, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Police spray-painted the road where the two cars ended up. They believe the driver who caused it fell asleep.

"I just heard a little bang,” said neighbor Mariano Vega.

Vega described hearing the crash feet away from his home in southwest Charlotte. When he got to Steele Creek Road, he saw the mangled mess of twisted metal from the head-on accident.

Police said Trungquan Tran, 23, fell asleep while driving along the two-lane road.

Investigators said he crossed into the path of a car driven by 56-year-old Debra Oehmke, who died an hour later at the hospital.

Vega said he and his family have seen three serious accidents on this stretch of Steele Creek Road since moving here three years ago.

"People go over the speed limit all the time here,” Vega said. “One car was turned inside out and the other was really bad. Firefighters tried to help to get somebody out of the car. They actually ripped off the hood to get them out.”

Investigators said they have ruled out both speed and alcohol as factors in the crash.

Channel 9 saw police parked out on the road Wednesday afternoon trying to slow drivers down.
