Hoosick, N.Y : North Bennington man killed in crash with a tractor-trailer on Thursday afternoon, March 30, 2017
A North Bennington man was killed when an SUV he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer on Thursday afternoon.
Joseph Anton, 96, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Rensselaer County Medical Examiner's Office, according to New York State Police.
The fatal two-vehicle crash took place at about 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of New York Route 7 and the connector road to Vermont Route 279 (the Bennington Bypass).
Anton was driving a vehicle westbound on Route 7 when he approached the intersection with the Bennington Bypass connector, where he failed to stop and yield to a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound, police said.
The initial investigation found Anton's actions caused the collision and that drugs or alcohol were not a factor, state police said in a news release. An autopsy is scheduled for a later date.
Dean Shippee, 26, Brattleboro, was operating the tractor-trailer, according to state police. The truck is owned by United Natural Foods Inc. of Greenwood, Ind. and was empty at the time of the collision.
The Ford SUV being driven by Anton received extensive damage to its front-end and driver's side. The truck received some damage to its front end.
The collision caused some delays as traffic was re-routed around the scene. Crews were at the scene throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
New York state troopers from the Brunswick barracks were assisted at the scene by the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office, the Hoosick Fire Department and the Hoosick Rescue Squad. The state police collision reconstruction and commercial vehicle enforcement units also responded to the scene.
