Two people died in a traffic accident early Sunday morning on Interstate 43, according to a Wisconsin State Patrol news release.
The fatal crash occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday at mile marker 6 of Interstate 43 near Clinton. Besides the two fatalities, four other people were injured and transported to nearby hospitals, according to the release.
By Sunday evening, the southbound lanes had been cleared. Southbound traffic is being detoured to Interstate 90/39, via Highway 14 and Highway 140, according to an incident update.
A southbound Chevrolet Suburban was traveling slowly or stopped in the right lane with its hazard lights flashing. A Schneider semitrailer truck did not see the vehicle and struck the Suburban’s left rear, according to the release.
The semi overcorrected and rolled over, with its cab landing in the ditch on the right side of the Interstate. Its trailer extended into both southbound lanes.
The semi driver was uninjured. Three people in the Suburban suffered serious injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment, according to the release.
Shortly after that crash, a southbound pickup truck collided with the semitrailer. Two occupants in the pickup truck were killed, and another was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, according to the release.
The victims’ identities have not been released, and the crash remains under investigation.
Sgt. Gary Helgerson of the Wisconsin State Patrol said police do not believe alcohol was a factor at this time.
The Clinton fire and police departments, Beloit fire and police departments, Turtle Fire Department, South Beloit Fire Department and the Rock County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
