Ames, IA : ISU student dies after weightlifting accident on Monday, December 26th 2016

An Iowa State student is dead after a weightlifting accident Monday morning, The Des Moines Register reported Wednesday.

22-year-old Kyle Thomson was bench pressing at Elite Edge Transformation Gym in Ankeny when the weight slipped from his grasp. Thomson was taken to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

"This is a difficult and painful time, and our thoughts are with the member’s family. Grief counselors are meeting with staff and gym members over the next couple of days," Elite Edge Transformation Gym Owner Joe Brammer said in a statement. "We would ask that you keep his family in your prayers."

Thomson was lifting 315 pounds at the time of the accident and spotters were present,
