An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper was killed Saturday night while responding to a jack-knifed semitrailer on Interstate 40 near Shawnee.

The trooper has been identified as Nicholas Dees. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dees was the son of a retired trooper.

The second trooper who was struck was Keith Burch. He was transported to OU Medical Center and is listed in serious condition, according to officials.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Trooper Dees and are praying for Trooper Burch's full recovery," OHP Chief Rick Adams said in a statement.

The two troopers were at the scene when a second vehicle hit the semitrailer, an OHP spokesperson said. After hitting the semitrailer, the vehicle hit both troopers.

The driver who struck the troopers was transported to an Oklahoma City-area hospital. He is in stable condition, according to officials.

The semitrailer driver sustained minor injuries from the initial accident.

OHP is investigating the secondary crash involving Dees and Burch. No charges have been filed and no arrests have been made, according to officials.

Both east- and west-bound lanes of I-40 at mile marker 195 in Seminole County have been reopened. They were closed for 14 hours.
