WORCESTER, MA : 62-year-old man dies from injuries in Blithewood Avenue crash on Wednesday, 19th September 2018

A 62-year-old man died from injuries suffered in a one-car crash on Blithewood Avenue Tuesday night.

Police did not identify the man; he had to be extricated from the car and was rushed to a local hospital. Police said he was pronounced dead around 11:35 p.m.

The Crash Reconstruction Unit investigated; preliminary findings indicated the man was driving a 2005 Mercedes-Benz sedan south on Blithewood just after 10:30 p.m. when it left the road and struck a tree adjacent to the southbound lane. He was trapped in the car; neighbors said Tuesday night they heard a loud bang and came out to find the wrecked car in the road with its engine on fire. A neighbor used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames.

Car parts were strewn along the roadway for quite a distance; the entire road was closed.

Firefighters worked to free the victim while paramedics tended to him through the passenger-side window. After several minutes he was freed from the car and put in an ambulance.
