South San Jose, CA : Fatal car-racing crash on Sunday, 1st September 2019
San Jose police on Sunday were trying to find three people whose vehicle was involved in a deadly two-car race on city streets Saturday evening that resulted in the deaths of the two occupants in the other car.
After receiving reports of an apparent racing crash and major-injury collision in South San Jose, officers were dispatched to the area of Snell and Rosenbaum avenues shortly before 6:30 p.m., according to San Jose police Officer Gina Tepoorten.
Tepoorten said a preliminary investigation revealed that a black 2014 Jeep and a gray BMW were racing northbound on Snell Avenue, north of Rosenbaum Avenue, when the driver of the Jeep lost control and slammed into a tree on the east side of Snell Avenue.
The BMW stopped and three men got out, but after viewing the crash scene they got back into their vehicle and drove away, according to Tepoorten. They were described only as males.
The two people in the Jeep were pronounced dead at the scene. Late Sunday, the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased as Miguel Angel Rodriguez, 33, of San Jose, and Ernesto Chapa, 26, of San Jose, Bay City News reported.
San Jose police detectives working the case did not immediately respond Sunday to calls about the two dead men or the three men who fled the scene.
