Surry, ME : Two motorists injured in a two-vehicle collision on Route 172 in Surry on Thursday afternoon, July 14, 2016
Two motorists were injured after a two-vehicle crash on Route 172 near the Surry General Store Thursday.
A car heading north toward Ellsworth was trying to pass another vehicle, which sped up and wouldn’t let him over, Maine State Police Trooper David Barnard said. That vehicle continued on.
Meanwhile, the car ran out of room due to oncoming traffic, went off the left side of the road and hit a dirt shoulder, the trooper said.
“As soon as he hit the dirt, he lost control and that pushed him out into the middle of the road,” Barnard said.
The car then struck a sport utility vehicle traveling toward Blue Hill, Barnard said.
Matthew Rankin, 25, of Bass Harbor was driving the car, a Hyundai, which sustained significant damage, Barnard said.
The Hyundai struck a Kia sport utility vehicle operated by Sonya Mitchell, 45, of Trenton, Barnard said. The SUV also sustained significant damage, he said.
Rankin suffered leg injuries and Mitchell had back and neck pain, the trooper said. Both motorists were taken to a local hospital. Neither vehicle was carrying passengers.
Barnard summoned Rankin on a charge of failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.
The Surry and Blue Hill volunteer fire departments provided traffic control. Peninsula Ambulance transported Rankin. County Ambulance was at an accident scene in Sullivan, so Bucksport Ambulance was called to transport Mitchell, Barnard said.
