An Asheboro man has died of injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle crash Thursday morning.
Jimmy Leon Lynch, 73, died Saturday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem where he had been transported for life-threatening injuries, according to a press release from the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
Troopers responded to the crash, involving three vehicles, at the intersection of U.S. 64 and Oakgrove Road at approximately 6:15 a.m. Thursday.
A 2006 Ford van, driven by Lynch, was traveling south on Oakgrove Road. A 2006 Volvo tractor-trailer, driven by Trey Emmett Dawson, 25, of Asheboro, was traveling west on U.S. 64. The tractor-trailer was operated by Waste Recovery Solutions and hauling a dumpster container.
A 2002 GMC pickup, driven by Tony Hillery Whitaker, 55, of Asheboro, was traveling east on U.S 64.
The release stated that Lynch failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection and his van was struck by the tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer came to rest in the roadway, while Lynch’s van traveled into the eastbound lane of U.S. 64 and struck the GMC pickup. Both Lynch and Whitaker’s vehicles came to rest on the eastbound shoulder of U.S. 64.
Lynch was transported to Randolph Health and then to Baptist.
Whitaker, Dawson and passengers in Dawson’s vehicle were not injured in the crash.
