Albany,NY : Teen killed in Fort Erie crash on September, Monday 25th 2017

A 16-year-old from Fort Erie has died of injuries he suffered in a two-vehicle collision on Monday afternoon.

At about 2:30 p.m., Niagara Regional Police, Fort Erie Fire Department and Niagara Emergency Medical Services responded to reports of a crash at Garrison Road and Helena Street.

Police said in a news release that a 17-year-old male from Ennismore, Ont., was driving a 2009 Dodge Journey with five teenaged passengers, all of them Fort Erie residents.

The Dodge was travelling east on Garrison Road when it entered the intersection at Helena Street and collided with a 2014 BMW 550i that was being driven south by a 63-year-old man from Niagara Falls.

The collision caused the Dodge to roll onto its roof and come to final rest within the intersection.

The BMW remained on its wheels and also came to final rest in the intersection, said the release issued by the NRP on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old was transported to a trauma centre in Western New York but died shortly after his arrival, police said.

All other occupants involved in the collision received minor injuries, said police.

Police have not released the name of the victim but tributes are being made on social media to Cole Doneff and his family.

A star player with the Niagara Falls Falcons baseball team, the club said sometimes “life throws a curveball” and that Doneff is their “Angel in the Outfield,” also offering condolences to his loved ones.

“The Falcons lost a great player but a better person. Cole will always be a Falcon and his laughter and spirit will not be forgotten,” the team posted on its Facebook page.

Doneff was a Grade 11 student at Greater Fort Erie Secondary School.

Principal Fred Louws said counsellors and central supports have been brought in to help with grieving students and the Employee and Family Assistance Program has been made available for faculty.

Police investigators are requesting that residents and businesses in the area of the intersection review any surveillance or dash camera footage that may have captured the involved vehicles approach to the intersection, as well as the collision. Any witnesses are asked by police to contact detectives at 905-688-4111 ext. 5500.

The investigation is ongoing.
