Athol, MA : One person died, one died in a fatal four-car crash on Route 2 on Thursday afternoon August 14th 2014

State police are investigating a fatal four-car crash on Route 2 in Athol Thursday afternoon. A 25-year-old Shirley woman driving a 2013 Hyundai Accent allegedly struck two vehicles when trying to pass cars in the breakdown lane around 3 p.m. Thursday, according to a statement from the Massachusetts State Police. The second vehicle she struck, a 2010 Toyota Prius, crossed over into the westbound lane of Route 2 as a result of the impact and was then struck head-on by a tractor-trailer. A passenger in the Prius, 68-year-old Carole Lawton, of Arlington, died from her injuries. The driver of the Prius, a 67-year-old Arlington man, was transported to Athol Memorial Hospital and later UMass Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
