Wilmington, North Carolina
State troopers have identified a woman who was hit by a vehicle and killed while walking along I-40 in New Hanover County early Wednesday morning.
According to Trooper Parker, the accident happened around 5:30 a.m. near mile marker 416A.
Parker said a black Mercedes was traveling westbound on I-40 when it collided with Ann Gillum, 52, of Raleigh, who was walking in the right-hand side of the roadway.
Gillum was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe Gillum was involved in an earlier accident on the eastbound side of I-40. Parker said a silver Ford Escape belonging to Gillum was found in a ditch about a 100 yards from where she was hit and killed.
Parker said it's unclear why Gillum would have left the Escape and crossed onto the opposite side of I-40.
The westbound lanes of I-40 were closed about three hours while the accident was investigated.
