Augusta, ME : Skateboarder injured in South Portland car crash still in hospital on May, Thursday, 25th 2017

The 11-year-old skateboarder who was injured when he and a car collided in South Portland remained in the pediatric intensive care unit at Maine Medical Center on Thursday, South Portland police said.

South Portland Police Lt. Frank Clark said investigators have ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor, and say speed does not appear to have been a factor, either. Police have not released the identity of the 41-year-old driver, who is from Lewiston and works near the scene of the crash.

An accident reconstructionist from the Gorham Police Department is helping to investigate the circumstances of the crash, Clark said. A decision on whether to file charges in the case will be made in consultation with the District Attorney’s Office when the investigation is complete, he said.

The South Portland boy, whose name has not been released, was skateboarding on Palmer Street and entering its intersection with Elm Street in the Turner Island neighborhood when he was hit by a four-door compact Toyota. The boy was taken by ambulance to the Portland hospital.

The driver of the car had just left work and had not gone far when the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The driver contacted police and has cooperated with the investigation, police said.

Police are still trying to determine whether the boy hit the car first, or the car’s fender hit the boy.

Two adults from the neighborhood witnessed the crash, Clark said.
