A Texas high school student who took weeks of after-school classes to gain his diploma was killed in a car crash on his way to graduation.
Omar Rodas was headed to the NRG Stadium in Houston to graduate with fellow Klein Forest High School students 9 a.m. Saturday, reports the Houston Chronicle.
But the 18-year-old never made it.
Friends and family were surprised when he didn't cross the stage after his name was called out. Then they discovered he died on Interstate 45 two hours earlier after the Honda Accord he was driving crashed.
Rodas was wearing his graduation cap and gown in the fatal smash, reports My Fox Houston.
Rescue crews pulled him out of the wreck but he was already dead. Two other cars were involved in the incident. The conditions of the other drivers aren’t known.
Police are now investigating.
Initial reports suggest Rodas was driving southbound on the North Freeway at Main at 7:10 a.m. when he veered out of the lane and hit the back of a dump truck.
